Transfer to Deià - Artists’ Mountain Refuge

Deià is one of Mallorca’s most picturesque villages, nestled in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. This small municipality of barely 700 inhabitants has been a refuge for artists, writers and bohemians from around the world for decades.

Literary Heritage and History

The village gained international fame when British poet and novelist Robert Graves settled here in 1929. Graves, author of “I, Claudius” and “The Greek Myths,” lived in Deià for over 50 years until his death in 1985. His house, located on the village’s main street, is now a museum preserving his library, manuscripts and personal belongings.

Graves’ presence attracted other intellectuals and artists such as Anaïs Nin, Alec Guinness, and more recently, musician Mike Oldfield, creator of “Tubular Bells.”

Architecture and Landscape

Deià’s houses, built with traditional Mallorcan stone, blend perfectly with the mountainous landscape. The terraces of centuries-old olive trees and dry stone walls (known as “marjades”) create a unique landscape that has inspired generations of artists.

Practical Visitor Tips

Important parking warning: According to recent visitor testimonials on Reddit, parking in Deià can be “an absolute nightmare, especially in summer.” Spaces are very limited and streets are narrow. It’s recommended to arrive very early (before 9:00 AM) or use public transport from Sóller. If you are coming from Palma without a car, the Sóller train, tram and bus 204 are the realistic options, and none of them leaves from the airport.

One visitor shared: “We arrived at 11:00 AM in August and drove around for 45 minutes without finding parking. We finally had to park 1 km from the village and walk in the sun.”

What to See and Do

Robert Graves House Museum

The former residence of the British poet preserves the original atmosphere of his study. Here he wrote some of his most important works and maintained correspondence with figures like Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall.

Cala Deià

A small pebble cove accessible by a winding path. Although small, its crystal-clear waters and the bohemian atmosphere of the beach bar make it a special place. Tip: Bring water shoes, as the beach is rocky.

Son Marroig

This historic estate of Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria offers some of the best views of the north coast. Its gardens and the famous Carrara marble temple are perfect for panoramic photos.

Gastronomic Experiences

Deià has several quality restaurants, from the famous Es Racó d’es Teix (Michelin star) to small bistros with terraces overlooking the views. The atmosphere is sophisticated but relaxed, reflecting the village’s artistic personality.

Interesting Facts

  • Cemetery with views: Robert Graves is buried in the village’s small cemetery, with one of the best views of the Mediterranean coast.
  • Celebrity refuge: Besides writers, the village has been a temporary home for actors like Michael Douglas and Pierce Brosnan.
  • Olive tradition: Some of the municipality’s olive trees are over 1,000 years old.
  • Literary route: There’s a marked trail connecting Robert Graves’ favorite places for walking and writing.

Deià represents the most authentic and cultural Mallorca, where the Mediterranean landscape meets European intellectual tradition, creating a unique atmosphere that continues to attract visitors seeking beauty and inspiration.

Palma Airport to Deià: frequently asked questions

How much is a transfer from Palma Airport to Deià?

A private transfer from Palma Airport (PMI) to Deià starts from €132 per vehicle, not per person, for a standard car with up to 4 passengers and luggage. Larger vehicles for groups cost more and the exact price is shown before you book. You pay the driver on arrival, there are no airport or luggage supplements, and the price does not change at night or on Sundays, unlike a metered taxi.

How far is Deià from Palma Airport and how long does the transfer take?

Deià is 35 km from Palma Airport and the transfer usually takes 45 minutes, via Ma-10 scenic mountain road. Allow extra time on summer Saturdays between 10:00 and 14:00, the changeover peak, when Mallorca's motorways carry their heaviest traffic of the year.

Taxi or pre-booked transfer from Palma Airport to Deià: what is the difference?

A taxi from the airport rank runs on the official meter (airport supplement, higher tariff at night and on holidays, extra for more than 4 passengers) and for one or two people on a daytime run it is often the cheaper option. A pre-booked transfer from €132 is a price you know before you fly, per vehicle, with the driver already waiting in arrivals holding your name, your flight tracked, the vehicle sized to your group and luggage, child seats on request and no queue at the rank.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Nothing changes for you. We track your flight number and adjust the pickup to the real landing time at no extra cost, so your driver is in the arrivals hall whenever you come through. You only pay when you arrive, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the transfer.
