How much is the Palma to Sóller train, and how long does it take?
A one-way ticket costs 23€, the return costs 30€, and the ride takes about an hour each way. The Ferrocarril de Sóller has been running the same narrow-gauge line since 1912, with wooden carriages, brass fittings and 13 tunnels bored through the Serra de Tramuntana. It leaves from its own station on Plaça d’Espanya in central Palma, right beside the Estació Intermodal, and it ends in Sóller town, not at the sea. If you are heading for the beach you still need the tram, which is a separate ticket.
Two things surprise first-time passengers. The first is that the train is priced and run as an excursion rather than as commuter transport, which is why a 30 km trip costs more than a taxi across Palma. The second is that it stops for a few minutes at the Mirador del Pujol d’en Banya so everyone can photograph the valley from above. That stop is the reason the hour is worth it, and also the reason the train will never be the fastest way to Sóller. We have been driving guests into this valley since 2017, and the ones who come back raving about the train are always the ones who rode it as a morning out rather than as a way of reaching their hotel.
What is the Sóller train timetable in 2026?
When we checked in August 2026, trains left Palma at 10:10, 13:30, 15:10, 18:30 and 19:40, and returned from Sóller at 09:00, 12:15, 14:00, 17:15, 18:00, 18:30 and 19:30. Some of those departures are marked as subject to confirmation at the ticket office, which tells you how much this timetable moves.
It moves seasonally. Winter timetables run fewer departures and shift the times, and published third-party schedules for the low season already show a different pattern, with departures around 10:30, 12:50, 15:10 and 18:00. So treat any timetable you read online, including this one, as a guide and confirm your train the day before on the official site. Tickets for most routes are sold at the ticket office on the day, and only the combined round trip is reliably sold online, so arriving 30 minutes early is not optional in July and August.
How much is the tram from Sóller to Port de Sóller?
10€ one way, and it runs roughly every half hour. The tram is the second half of the postcard: an open wooden car from 1913 that rattles down the main street of Sóller, past the orange groves and out along the seafront of Port de Sóller. Trams leave Sóller from around 08:00 until about 20:35 and come back from the Port between roughly 08:30 and 21:05, so you are never stranded during the day.
If you plan to do the whole thing in one day, the combined ticket is the one to buy: 40€ covers the train from Palma, the tram to Port de Sóller and the return. Bought separately, the same trip adds up to 23€ plus 10€ plus 10€ plus 23€, so the combined fare saves a real amount of money. It is also the only ticket the operator sells online with any consistency.
Is there a train from Palma Airport to Sóller?
No. There is no railway station at Palma de Mallorca airport, and no train of any kind serves the terminal. This is the single most common misunderstanding about the Sóller train, and it is worth being blunt about it: the historic station is 9 km away from where you land.
To reach it you have two public options. The EMT bus A1 runs from the arrivals level to Plaça d’Espanya in about 20 minutes, every 15 minutes or so, for a few euros per person (EMT publishes the current fare, and it is cheaper with a contactless bank card than in cash). Or you take a metered taxi from the rank. Either way you then wait for the next train, which may be three hours off, and you carry your luggage through it all. The train has no luggage van and does not allow bicycles or scooters on board. Every season we meet people in arrivals who have come off the plane looking for a platform that has never existed there, and what makes the detour hurt is never the timetable, it is the suitcases.
What about the bus from Palma to Sóller and Port de Sóller?
TIB line 204 links Palma with Sóller in about 35 minutes and with Port de Sóller in about 45, roughly every 30 minutes, and it is by far the cheapest option. Buses leave the Estació Intermodal in Palma from 06:10 in the morning until midnight, and come back from Port de Sóller from 06:30 until 23:30. A few of the earliest services run Monday to Saturday only.
The fare is zonal rather than distance-based, and TIB caps every journey at four zone jumps, so even a long trip stays in single-figure euros. As a reference the Balearic government quotes 2.40€ for a two-jump journey on the general profile, and during 2026 all trips paid with the reloadable Intermodal or Unique card are free. Paying the driver in cash on board is the most expensive way to travel, so check the current fare and the card options on tib.org before you go. The catch is the same as with the train: line 204 starts in central Palma, not at the airport.

The table makes the real decision obvious once you separate the two jobs. Getting to your hotel with suitcases is a transport problem, and the train solves it badly: it does not start at the airport, it runs five times a day and it charges per person. A door-to-door transfer to Sóller from 125€ or to Port de Sóller from 135€ is priced per car, so for a family of four it is often the cheaper option as well as the faster one. Spending a morning in the Tramuntana is an experience, and there the train has no competition at all. That split is exactly what we see in our own bookings: the transfer on arrival day, and the train midweek, once your hands are free.
How far is Sóller from Palma, really?
About 30 km and 32 minutes by road, through the Ma-11 tunnel under the Coll de Sóller. Port de Sóller is 36 km from the airport, which we measure at around 45 minutes in normal traffic. The train takes an hour for the same valley because it was built before the tunnel existed and still climbs the original 1912 alignment.
Sóller in August is also one of the routes where traffic hurts most: in our measurement of eight routes from Palma airport, Port de Sóller had the largest relative delay of the lot, going from 42 minutes on an empty road to 58 in the pessimistic scenario of a Saturday at midday. That is worth building into your plan for the trip back to the airport, whichever option you choose.
The practical answer: transfer to your hotel on the day you land, then ride the train and the tram midweek as the day out they were built to be. You get the valley from the Mirador without dragging a suitcase through Plaça d'Espanya, and you get to your room an hour earlier.

As transport, it is slow, infrequent and more expensive than the bus. Most visitors get the best of both by transferring to their hotel on arrival and riding the train later in the week as a day out.
