That is the whole article in one sentence; the rest is the evidence. It comes from our own published work: the official taxi tariff broken down, the 1,293-text Reddit study on Uber and the airport fares table. It also comes from the road: we have run these airport routes since 2017, so the scenarios below are the arrivals we handle week after week, not hypotheticals. We sell one of the three options, so judge for yourself whether the numbers below play fair.

When the taxi wins
One or two people, daytime, a short hop: take the taxi and do not overthink it. The rank at the airport is staffed whenever flights land, the meter is regulated and cheap over short distances, luggage is free, and 18-20€ into Palma is a price none of the alternatives beats. The same goes for moving around inside Palma or between neighbouring resorts by day. If that is your whole trip profile, our honest advice is that you do not need us; the tariff guide tells you what every ride should cost.
When Uber makes sense
Rarely, and almost never on price. Uber’s genuine use case here is narrow: you are inside Palma or the south-west by day, you strongly prefer app-native payment and trip records, and the quoted price beats the rank (it happens, but the corpus says it is the exception). Everything else argues against it: coverage stops outside the south-west, drivers thin out at night, there is a reported minimum of about 30€, and the same 20-minute trip that costs 45€ by meter has been reported at 70-100€ on the app in August. Surge is also the complaint we hear most often from arriving customers, usually delivered with the screenshot still open. The full evidence is in the Uber in Mallorca study.
When the pre-booked transfer wins
The four scenarios where on-demand stops being cheap and starts being a gamble. A 21:30 landing on a changeover Saturday with a hotel in Portocolom. Six people and six suitcases. A changeover Saturday with the rank queue at 30 minutes and a toddler. A fixed holiday budget where a meter running through August traffic is exactly the number you cannot plan. In those cases the comparison is not really taxi versus transfer; it is a guaranteed car versus hoping one turns up, and a price you know versus one you find out at the end. Our pickups run from 07:00 to 22:00; inside that window, both are fixed the moment you book. That certainty is the product: the transfer costs more than the meter on most routes, and it is the only option where nothing about the price or the pickup depends on how the evening goes. Since 2021 we have carried more than 4,000 customers on exactly these arrivals, 98.6% of them picked up on time, which is the only number that means anything once certainty is what you are buying.

The worked example: 6 people to Alcúdia, landing at 21:30
Taxi: you are on tariff 2 (about 83€ to Alcúdia) plus the 3€ large-vehicle supplement, if one of the bigger taxis is at the rank when you reach the front of the queue; if not, two standard taxis at about 83€ each. Uber: Reddit reports put the route around 80-90€ when a car is available, and at that hour availability is the problem. Pre-booked: an 8-seater from 153€, fixed when you booked it weeks earlier, with the driver already inside the terminal watching your delayed flight. One car at 153€ against two night-tariff taxis at about 166€ is the honest arithmetic; the guarantee on a changeover evening is the part the meter cannot sell you. That evening is an ordinary August shift for us, and it is why we track the flight itself rather than the scheduled landing time.

How this comparison was built
Every taxi figure is the official Mallorca reference tariff (Decree 20/2025) applied to road distances, as published in our taxi prices guide and airport fares table. Uber figures combine the app’s own PMI estimates with the 25 user-reported prices we coded in the Reddit study; user reports are quoted as reported, not verified. Our own prices are starting prices for the whole vehicle on each route, the same ones shown in the booking form. We publish the neutral guides and this opinionated one separately on purpose: the data does not change between them, only the question being answered.
Frequently asked questions
Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Mallorca?
Usually not. In the 25 Reddit price reports we coded for our Uber study, Uber came out at 1.5 to 2 times the metered fare for the same run, users mention a minimum charge of around 30€, and summer demand adds surge pricing on top. The metered taxi, on the published reference tariff, is the cheapest door-to-door option on the island.
Is it worth pre-booking a transfer in Mallorca?
For four situations, clearly yes: late-evening arrivals on the night tariff (when Uber thins out and small-town taxis are phone luck; our pickups run 07:00 to 22:00), groups of five or more (a standard taxi seats four, so you are otherwise paying for two cars), hotels in the north and east (long runs where the meter is exposed to August traffic billed as waiting time), and anyone who wants the total fixed before flying, which after eight seasons is the reason most of our own customers give. For one or two people hopping into Palma at midday, a taxi from the rank is cheaper and we say so plainly.
What is the best way from Palma airport to my hotel at night?
The taxi rank works whenever flights land, so you will not be stranded, at night on tariff 2 the meter simply charges about 10 to 12 percent more. Uber is the weak option at that hour: Reddit users report few or no drivers in the small hours. Our own transfers run from 07:00 to 22:00, so for a small-hours landing the rank is the honest answer; for any arrival inside those hours, a pre-booked transfer is the one option where car and price are guaranteed before you fly.
What should a group of 5 to 8 people take from Palma airport?
A single pre-booked van is usually the practical answer. Standard taxis seat four, so five or more means finding one of the larger taxis at the rank (with a 3€ to 6€ supplement) or splitting into two cars and paying two fares. A booked 8-seater to Alcúdia from 153€ for the whole vehicle often lands close to what two night-tariff taxis cost, with everyone travelling together.
Can I cancel a pre-booked transfer?
