What does a taxi cost in Mallorca in 2026?

2.50€ to get in, 1.20€ per kilometre, and a handful of fixed supplements: that is the whole system. Since Decree 20/2025 came into force on 25 May 2025, Palma and more than twenty other municipalities share a single reference tariff, and the joint service behind it now covers around 77% of the island’s taxi licences. In practice that means a taxi in Magaluf, Llucmajor or Palma charges the same rates, the price list is public, and any fare can be estimated before you get in. A five-minute hop inside Palma runs 7€ to 10€, ten kilometres cost about 14.50€ by day, and the long cross-island runs land between 70€ and 115€. We have worked alongside the taxi sector here since 2017, so this is not a list we looked up, it is the price sheet our own customers compare us against.

How do I estimate any taxi fare on the island?

Flag drop, plus kilometres times the rate, plus whichever supplements apply. Nothing else exists. Worked example: a 22 km daytime trip ordered by app comes to 2.50€ + 22 × 1.20€ + 1.15€ ≈ 30€. The same trip on a Saturday night: 2.85€ + 22 × 1.35€ + 1.15€ ≈ 34€. We do the same job for our own quotes with Google’s Routes API, which is only this arithmetic with the road distance measured for you. To save you the arithmetic:

When does the expensive tariff apply?

Every night from 21:00 to 07:00, all weekend and on public holidays. That is tariff 2: the flag drop rises to 2.85€ and the kilometre to 1.35€, roughly 10 to 12 percent over the daytime price. It matters more than it sounds, because tourist arrivals cluster exactly there: a Friday evening landing, a Saturday changeover, a Sunday return flight all ride on tariff 2. The meter switches automatically; there is nothing to negotiate and no reason a driver should quote you a different system.

What can make the real fare higher than the estimate?

Traffic, mostly, because standing still is billed too. The meter charges waiting time at 19.40€ per hour (21.40€ at night), so twenty minutes crawling on the Via de Cintura adds about 6.50€ that no distance formula predicts. In August that is not an edge case: our route times study measured delays of up to 38% over free-flow on the airport corridors. We drive those corridors daily through August, and the twenty minutes the distance formula cannot see is the most predictable part of the month. The other honest reasons are supplements you forgot to count and longer routes around pedestrianised old towns. Anything beyond that does not belong on the receipt: the tariff has no luggage charge, no per-passenger charge below five people, and no tourist rate. Reddit’s corpus backs the system up: overcharge complaints are rare (12 texts out of 1,293), and the standing advice is simply to check that the meter is on.

How do taxis compare with Uber and with a pre-booked transfer?

The rank taxi is the cheapest door-to-door option on the island, and we say that as the people selling the alternative. Uber, where it works, usually lands above the meter (the 25 price reports we coded put it at 1.5 to 2 times the taxi fare; the full picture is in the Uber in Mallorca study). A pre-booked private transfer costs more than the meter on most routes and buys a different thing: the price is fixed when you book, the driver tracks your flight and waits inside the terminal, and the vehicle fits a group of six with luggage in one car. Ours run from 68€ to Palma and from 153€ to Alcúdia, whole car, with nothing charged at booking. How do I pay, and should I tip?

Card and contactless are the norm, cash is the fallback, and tipping is a courtesy, not a rule. Travellers in our corpus consistently report paying by card, with the sensible caveat repeated each time: ask before the trip starts, especially outside Palma. Keep 20 or 30 euros in cash for the small-town edge cases. On tipping, Spain has no taxi-tipping culture; rounding up to the next euro is appreciated and nobody expects more. If you need a receipt, ask for it: every licensed taxi can issue one, and Aena explicitly recommends taking taxis only from the signed ranks and requesting a receipt at the airport.

Where these numbers come from

Every figure here is the official reference tariff for Mallorca set by Decree 20/2025 and the resolution of 25 June 2025 (BOIB), as published by the Govern and the Ajuntament de Palma, applied with plain arithmetic. The distance estimates are exactly that, estimates: a real meter also bills standing time, so August traffic lands above them.
